C-Section Recovery

A Mummy MOT is a great first step towards C-Section Recovery.

What is a C-Section?

A C-section (also known as a cesarean section) is a surgical procedure used to deliver your baby. A caesarean is a major operation and may be recommended as a planned (elective) procedure or in the case of an emergency. During a C-section, the cut is usually made across your tummy, just below the bikini line.

When should I book my Mummy MOT following a C-section?

Recovering from a caesarean usually takes longer than recovering from a vaginal delivery, therefore, we suggest you book a Mummy MOT following a c-section from 8 weeks postnatal.

During the Mummy MOT, the practitioner will discuss your delivery, offer a full postural screen, pelvic floor muscle assessment, abdominal muscle exam to check for any separation, and internal examination (if you wish), discuss and examine your C-section scar, and screen for bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction.

Your practitioner will offer a safe environment, educate and advise on activities, lifting the baby, or pushing your buggy. After the assessment, you will be given a written report on the findings of your assessment and a bespoke rehabilitation programme to fit your lifestyle and get back to your exercise goals.

Thinking about caesarian scar recovery and release?

It is important to mobilise the scar tissues to assist the natural scarring process and prevent potential adhesions which can lead to issues such as local, pelvic, and lower back pain, and urinary problems.

Alongside manual scar release these two options are also available at select clinics:

  • LPG Endermologie® offers a pain-free way to loosen scar tissue, improve skin quality, and reactivate exchanges.
  • LymphaTouch combines mechanical vibration and negative pressure to effectively activate the lymphatic circulation in the treated area, reducing swelling and pain. It is suitable for scar release, as well as for those suffering from secondary lymphedema due to C-section trauma.

Both medical LPG Endermologie® and LymphaTouch treatments are available at the Maria Elliott Physiotherapy Services or in select clinics across the UK and Ireland. Check the ‘Practitioner Directory’ to find your nearest practitioner offering these treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can typically book a Mummy MOT from 8 weeks postnatal after a C-section. This allows enough time for initial healing and ensures a thorough and safe assessment of your scar, posture, pelvic floor, and abdominal muscles.

Your Mummy MOT practitioner will perform a full postural screen, pelvic floor and abdominal assessment, and should you choose, an internal examination. They’ll also review and gently assess your C-section scar and screen for any signs of bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction, helping you return to movement safely.

Scar mobilisation can help prevent adhesions, which may cause pain, tension, or pelvic floor dysfunction. Releasing and stimulating the scar tissue helps improve movement, lymphatic drainage, and long-term recovery outcomes.

Select Mummy MOT clinics offer advanced treatments such as LPG Endermologie®, which painlessly loosens scar tissue and improves skin quality, and LymphaTouch, which reduces swelling and supports lymphatic flow. Both are excellent options for stubborn or painful scars.
